Sometimes you start university in the middle of a pandemic. And sometimes, before you know it, you realize you are six months into your degree… and three days into campus life. Coincidentally, it is also around this time you remember that in some far-gone dimension, extra-curriculars exist. Now, I’m but a lowly freshman – a bud on the edge of getting nipped. But society season in IBA is increasingly starting to seem like a flaring jungle around me, a game of whack-a-mole but with emails. Though there seems to be one for everything, here are a few (more) societies that I feel we could do with:
The Maskan Peace-Convention society:
I know things are bleak right now. You’ve taken the shuttle from the KU gate more times than a professor in an 8:30 AM class asks their students if they’re audible. You didn’t think you’d be living your teenage dystopia dreams quite like this. Something has to be done. IBA’s inside KU, so a Berlin Wall situation is out of the question – but you, as a leader of tomorrow can step up and put the skill-set you garnered in that one MUN you attended in ninth grade to use. Organize convenient marathons for when the shuttle is nowhere to be seen, don’t engage in fistfights, and you have yourself a spot!

Pending proposals: Why we ALL hate LUMS: Identifying a Common Enemy.
The Cementing Club:

Don’t understand why IBA put the freshmen in a campus miles away from the real deal? Also don’t understand why said campus is half sealed, and why there are chunks of gravel at the risk of falling off at any time? If you think that sanity lies in stabilizing – this one’s the perfect fit for you! Departments include cement pouring and brick kiln analytics – if you’re more into marketing, you can even design warning posters! (‘Sudden drop-off area’ doesn’t quite seem to do the trick…). Walk-in interviews – in non-life-threatening areas of the campus – will be held soon.
Upcoming events: Screening of San Andreas in the JS Auditorium.
The Ministry of Uneventfulness
I think we can all agree that many things happen in IBA. Almost too many things. In the last month alone, the advent of a certain app has put the flow of natural selection at risk, flash mobs have erupted in the City Campus (maybe that’s why the building is breaking), and more than the desired amount (0) of unmasked public gatherings have taken place. And your job is simple: make sure nothing happens. Members will have full creative control. Want to set all mass-email lists to ‘Me only’ (it’s not like anyone notices)? Want to crash planning meetings like LMS on a fairly normal day? You have nothing to lose! (Except maybe your level of likability as a person.)
Upcoming Events: ‘I am Not Ready for Biggest Event’. Online seminar-cum-protest. Date TBD.

IBA society recruitment season will, maybe, soon end (again, just a freshman). But until then, it’s just us, these ideas and – oh look, the attendance policy support group is hiring!
(Note: the above mentioned entities are solely for humorous purposes, and in no way, shape or form are meant to cause any offence.)
