Everyone has heard of Tinder but have you heard of “The Uni Dating”? Of course, you have. Since its launch, the dating application has been gaining rampant attention on social media. However, many articles written on this subject lack the creator’s point of view. To bridge this gap, we got an exclusive interview with the maker of this platform.
Where did you guys get the idea of creating such a dating application?
The idea of creating Uni Dating emerged during the lockdown. Due to a lack of communication and interaction, I observed that many people around me felt lonely and upset. Furthermore, this urged me to create something fun and useful. After watching my fair share of movies, the idea of creating a dating application popped into my mind. This idea ticked all the boxes of what I aimed to create.

How does the application work?
There is a link available on our Instagram page that takes the users to a signup and login page. Furthermore, the users have to sign up using their IBA email ID as other email IDs are not accepted. After signing up, the user enters the verification stage: they have to input the code they have received via email. Following the verification, the user has to provide their details such as basic information regarding themselves and their preferences. Once the user has completed this process, it’s just a right swipe or a left swipe. If the user receives a match, a chat option appears which allows you to exchange messages. The chats are completely private to ensure the user’s privacy.
What about harassment issues?
When the idea of Uni Dating was in its early stages, we studied the problems and issues users face when using an online dating application. It’s our main priority to create a safe space for our users. That is also the reason why we have made the application exclusive. We want to make sure we are able to create a safe dating environment for the students of IBA. Furthermore, the option of blocking is available to the users. The users can also report the person harassing them. The alleged harasser’s account will be reviewed and if found guilty, the account will be terminated.

Is there a process to rate your date or the person you are talking to?
We don’t have a rating system as we do not believe in the idea of rating human beings. I feel it’s very discriminatory to rate a person based on their compatibility with the other individual. Furthermore, opinions vary from person to person. Plus, our aim is to make dating easier and safe and the rating system doesn’t align with our mission.
A lot of people are questioning the validity of the application? what is your response to this allegation?
The application is not a scam. The user’s data is completely safe and we can guarantee you that we will not sell your data. Moreover, we are not making money out of the application as it’s only created for fun. Furthermore, the information we ask is similar to the ones the user will provide to other social media apps such as Facebook.
How has the response been so far?
The fact that it blew up on social media was very unexpected. What shocked us was when students from other universities messaged us to create a dating application for their respective universities as well. However, some responses have been negative as those individuals did not like the concept of our application. The negative comments don’t bother us as the dating application is created for entertainment purposes. If somebody stumbles upon their soulmate through our application, then that’s a plus point.
Future goals?
We plan to expand our operations to other universities as well. First, we will target the universities present in Karachi and if that’s successful, we will expand our operations in other cities as well.
Note: The responses have been edited for length and clarity.
