Just finished listening to “Na Tutteya Ve”, Coke Studio 2020’s season opener, and I just had to write this. For those of you who haven’t listened yet, you’re definitely in for a surprise – a rather lovely one, may I add. This remarkable piece has been sung by the famous Meesha Shafi, Sanam Marvi, Fariha Pervez, Zara Madani, Wajiha Naqvi & Sehar Gul Khan. The lyricists are Shuja Haider & Asim Raza, while Shuja also composed the song accompanied by Meesha Shafi. I’d highly recommend listening to it below, if you haven’t already, before reading any further!

Na Tutteya Ve – What didn’t break, exactly?

The song is about the frequent heartbreaks that women have to go through. These are mostly due to the double standards of society. However, the song talks about the resilience of such a heart, that shatters over and over again but does not break. where the strength of women in these circumstances keeps them going.

Ghazal’s article talked about the toxic Rishta culture prevalent in our society. It was shedding light on only one of the many toxicities that women have to face. It was an attempt to work on women’s rights and consequent women’s empowerment. Such campaigns are generally getting more attention by every passing day. At this point, this song “Na Tutteya Ve” feels like a perfect addition to the efforts of people working to bring around a change in toxic cultures.

The Lyrics and their beauty

It is heartwarming to see that the men of society have come up with such beautiful lyrics written for women. The kind that would uplift any woman. If you’re not a Punjabi or had a hard time understanding the song, have a look as Na Tutteya Ve’s translation to know what I mean.

Firstly, the song talks about a society that makes use of any existing chance to mock women. But the women, even after getting hurt, ignore such remarks and keep a brave face on. Then, it talks about how in marriage, a woman has to leave everything behind to start a completely new life. On the other hand, the man just welcomes one new person. But no one ever acknowledges this huge step on the woman’s part. And at times, the grooms’ families, as well as the grooms themselves, forget to make the brides feel welcomed. To them, it’s not a big deal because they are not dealing with that big of a change.

Next, the lyrics of “Na Tutteya Ve” talk about the differences in respect levels of women and men in our culture. And they condemn these double standards while bringing a higher authority in debate; The Almighty Allah. They question the people that when The Rabb has given respect to the women, who are they to take it away. And when the Supreme verdict comes in, they have no choice but to bow down. Otherwise, face the consequences.

And Finally, The Rap Ending….

And finally, the song ends with an amazing rap, in Punjabi! Punjabi raps do hit differently. Especially when the lyrics are talking about something that we all can relate to. Broken hearts and shattered dreams due to customs and traditions. Rituals that somehow always feel the need to place women’s dreams at the feet of men. Because those provide the perfect steps of the ladder that a man needs to climb towards success, right?

While the same men wouldn’t even realize they stepped on a heart, breaking it.
