These days, it seems as if the world is set on pause – each day a different story, a different struggle. When so many changes start to take place around you, it can be difficult to stay motivated and energized about what is to come; after all, in times like these, even monotony is a blessing. It’s both scary and unpredictable, but at the end of the day, an ordeal we all have to get through.

How can I make sure that while the world is locking down, I am still up and running?

Step 1: Remember your Roots

Your situation right now may be drastically different from what it was just a few months ago. Take a step back from the anxieties and worries of the present and try to focus on what kind of life you were leading pre-pandemic. What were you like before the virus was a reality? Did you have any goals, passions, or aspirations that you wanted to achieve? Think about any happy memories you had with loved ones you can no longer meet, and channel that positive energy into your interactions today. Crying is okay- even encouraged- to make sure nothing is bottled up inside anymore. This is just your mind taking care of itself.

Step 2: Shorten your Screen Time

With so many people working from home, the time we spend parked in front of a screen has increased drastically. Whether we’re taking an online class, catching up on the news, or winding down after a long day, every aspect of our life comes from one source- the internet. Though access to the world online is definitely a major blessing, we have to be careful to not go overboard. Being aware of statistics and our current affairs is important- but not at the cost of added anxiety and obsession over the numbers. Spend some of that time in exercising or trying out a new recipe. It might be difficult at first, but your body will thank you later.

Step 3: Hold on to Those That Matter

Taking care of others can help you take care of yourself

If there’s one thing that this pandemic has made glaringly obvious, it is the fact that all of us are here on borrowed time. As a young woman myself, I feel as if I only recently realized that my parents are not as healthy as they used to be. As grown children, being placed in a situation where we have to start taking care of the people that raised us is, quite frankly, terrifying. Those that have lost their family to this virus know this the most.

So cherish this time. Ask your grandmother about her childhood memories. Have a meaningful conversation with your father about his worries during the pandemic. Make your sister her favorite dessert yourself, from scratch. Take care of the people around you- you never know just who might be needing it.
