Korean dramas (K-dramas) are the hottest new trend right now. Korean music and TV are making waves worldwide, with BTS winning ‘best group’ at the American Music Awards, outperforming The Jonas Brothers, and K-dramas being available on Netflix! So, what’s the hype around Korean culture about, and should you be hooked? Read on to find out!

1. Food

Warning: don’t watch Korean dramas when you’re hungry. Because who can resist the egg rolls, fried rice, fish cakes, or any other type of food consistently being shown on K-dramas? Indeed, every time my favorite characters sit down for a meal (which happens all too often!), I get hunger pangs and want to join them!

The good news is that while American TV shows make you grab junk food like a bag of crisps and Coke, K-dramas will have you eating more wholesome food like kimchi or ramen!

2. K-dramas are single-season shows

If you’re like me, you can’t handle watching dozens of repetitive seasons for an American TV show. But at the same time, you’d like to know how the series concluded, and all the good twists and turns. The solution? Watch K-dramas instead! Each drama is a single season, with 15-18 episodes, with just the right length for a perfect plot buildup. And with a satisfying ending, you don’t even want a second season to spoil anything as you’re so content with the first!

3. K-dramas have catchy music

Korean OSTs are just too good!

Each K-drama has its own set of OSTs (Original Sound Tracks). These are the perfect blend of soft, mellow tunes for light scenes and energetic beats to keep the action going. In fact, you will often find yourself trying to sing the songs, even when you don’t know any Korean! For instance, I sometimes find myself singing songs from dramas I watched months ago. So, take that as an indicator of how addictive and catchy K-drama OSTs are!

4. Cuteness

You’ll be saying ‘aww’ when the female lead prepares a lunchbox especially for her Oppa, and shyly proffers it. The cuteness in K-dramas can be subtle as well as more pronounced but can soften even the most cold-hearted viewers. Additionally, you’ll soon find yourself drawn to how cute the characters can be, and the next thing you know, you’re addicted!

5. There are many K-drama genres

Some people argue that Korean dramas are just rom-com, or too “cheesy” and perhaps sappy. However, just like any other country’s entertainment industry, Korean dramas come in a wide range of genres to choose from. So, you get science fiction and thrillers to action, historical and comedy! Therefore, based on all these, there is bound to be a K-drama out there to match your taste.

The overall takeaway: K-dramas are here to stay. And watching some episodes would actually be the biggest gift you can give yourself in this quarantine! So, if you’re interested, head over to Viki for some free streaming! Happy watching 😊
