Skills are the most valuable asset when it comes to excelling in a career in today’s era. In fact, people who can learn many skills in a short time are prioritized over those who lack time efficiency. Unfortunately, our typical learning habits are not a big help when it comes to learning skills quickly.

Lucky for you, here are tips that will help you excel at learning every skill you could possibly imagine!

Set a Goal

Define goals when learning skills

Knowing your end goal is the most essential thing when it comes to learning any skill. It will keep you moving in a consistent direction – especially, when things get rough, which they will. So, it is crucial that you make a concrete and defined plan. When setting goals, make sure you identify what it is that is making you learn the skill in the first place. Jotting down the motivation and revisiting those as you make progress is going to help be on track in the long run.

Deconstructing the Skill

It is easy to break down your learning goals into smaller parts in order to minimize learning time as much as possible. Why should we break it down? Because bigger and more complex skills – from learning how to play a guitar to Adobe Illustrator – are just bundles of smaller ones. By deconstructing a skill into its components, it is easy for us to learn and relate to each part of its component.

All the reasons why you might give up on the skill!

The first few lessons will be hard. You will be confronting with how much you know about the skill and how much you don’t. It will be frustrating and you will be the most liable then – prompting you to lose motivation and quit.

It gets frustrating..

We will lose motivation but it’s better to know how to deal with it in time. It is a question of preparation after all. Be honest with yourself and make a list of all the reasons. For the first few lessons, try to dodge the pitfalls and go easily on yourself.

Focus on the 20%

We all are aware of the 80-20 rule: 20% efforts will lead to 80% of the desired outcome.

This is where you will know why we deconstructed the skill. Let’s say you are learning to play a musical instrument, the hardest thing to do is to memorize the four chords. Similarly, you need to focus on learning the three basic techniques when you’re learning how to cook.

In other words, the component that you are focusing on, make sure it is the most impactful one!

Focus on one component of the skill at a time

We all struggle with multitasking and usually, it drags our progress down when we do many things at once. So try to focus on working on one thing before jumping to the next. It will not only help you learn better but you will be done with it in a more time-efficient manner if you already have an idea of what the component is!

If you don’t know what you want to learn or have no idea where to start, this article might just get you on your feet and towards a successful career!
