Sujood, sajdah, or prostration to Allah SWT is a daily occurrence in our lives. We perform this simple act tens of times each day, but do we embrace the healing power it holds for us? What really happens when we physically show submission to the Highest of All?
We realize our status as humble creatures
Sujood is our acknowledgement of the humble status we have as powerless creatures. We were given the lives we have. We may plan and work, but nothing will happen unless Allah SWT decrees it. He determines the place of every atom in all of existence. He knows every microorganism and has enumerated every speck of dust. Nothing is unknown to Him and He is the Most Merciful upon all. How powerless are we?
This is why we prostrate to Him in prayer. We acknowledge that our lives exist because of Him and all that we are and have is dependent upon Him. He is the Creator and we are His creation. This is a liberating realization from sujood can lift the worries weighing heavily on our shoulders. We then focus on the one thing we truly own and are responsible for: our choices.
We let go of worries
As Allah SWT is the Supreme Ever-Trusted Trustee of Affairs (Al-Wakeel), we can see sujood as physical way of handing our worries to Allah SWT. With each prostration, we acknowledge the fragility of hearts that need the Creator for support. Thus, sujood works as a daily means of handing our worries to the One who is the Best of Helpers.
So if you’re worried something then let it fall off of your shoulders every time you bow to Allah SWT. It doesn’t matter if you’re worried about the same thing every time. All that matters is that we keep reminding ourselves of Allah SWT’s Supreme Power over every part of our lives, especially through sujood. With time, we learn to trust Him and work our way through life with positivity.
We understand how praising Allah SWT helps us
Prayer allows us the blessing of sujood and praising Allah SWT’s magnificence tens of times each day. This has insight that can really benefit us. We praise Allah SWT while we physically demonstrate that we submit to Him because He is the Originator, Cherisher, and Lord of all. No one can be submitted to or be worthy of worship other than Allah SWT.
We acknowledge His Power and Mercy, whether we realize it or not, in every sujood. So if anything goes wrong or the future seems dark, remember that we praise Allah SWT in sujood as the Exalted and Most High; indeed, He is Competent over everything. We just have to remind ourselves consciously of this fact.
To sum it up, sujood is a blessing. Engaging in it everyday while gradually embracing the guidance embedded within it can do wonders for us!
