Are you feeling uneasy because of the weather? Quarantined in your room all day, in the sweltering heat getting too much for you? Has your air conditioner thrown in the towel?  Worry not, because there are tips to beat the heat! Whether your A/C disowned you, you’re worried about the environmental impact of air conditioners, or you’re looking to clamp down on your electricity bill, here are some tips to rejuvenate yourself so you can survive those soaring temperatures!

Tip#1 Eat light and in small portions

Avoid the heavy, spicy Nihari meal for dinner. In summer, it’s better to indulge in less oily food and lighter condiments to stay fresh and create that perfect summer glow for your skin.

Also, try to have your food in small portions spread throughout the day instead of stuffing yourself completely in one go. Binge-eating will not only make you a lazy potato, but eating smaller portions will help you stay cooler because your body produces metabolic heat to process food, and the larger your meal is, the more your body warms up.

Tip#2 Liquids are your best friend

No, I don’t mean downing a whole can of Sting or any other fizzy drink. I mean home-made juices from the fruits that summer blesses us with! We happen to get falsa, plum, lychee, peach, mango, and more this time of the year. Any food that consists entirely of fluids, like watermelon, is your best friend during the summer months to keep cool. Besides, who doesn’t like a cold glass of ‘limo pani’ on a hot summer day?

Also, don’t forget your regular old 8 glasses of water! Not drinking enough water can lead to heat exhaustion, so try and have water with every small meal you have. Alternatively, keep a bottle of water with you and take a swig whenever your water-tracking app sends you a reminder!

Tip#3 Keep your moisturizers in the fridge during Summers

You get moisture and rejuvenation from your cooled cream, but you also get a cooling effect on your skin for free when you apply it. Neat trick, right?

Tip#4 Ventilate your kitchen to stay cool

We’re all turning into cooks during the quarantine. But did you know that spending too many hours in the kitchen during the summer is why you can’t cool off? Make sure your kitchen is well-ventilated to avoid skin damage and your own suffocation. Also, escape the heat pouring from the stove by getting out of there periodically!

Tip#5 Wear Light clothes and light colours

Swap your favorite hot pink shirt with more of a summery, baby pink shade; lighter colors reflect most of the sunlight away from you, while darker colors absorb extra heat! Try colors like pale yellow, baby blue, or white.

Go for cotton/lawn clothes which are looser and flowier, allowing you to breathe through them rather than restrictive tops or jeans (although, who would wear jeans at home in this weather anyway?). The ooh-la-la silk and satin can wait for one of those welcome parties or farewell party nights at IBA. Until then, let’s loosen up a bit.

And that’s it! Following these tips to beat the heat will ensure you to spend a cool, calm, and enjoyable two or three months at home. Happy summer!
