It would be safe to say, that in terms of higher education, Pakistanis have some favorite degrees, and the social sciences are not one of them. As a student of the social sciences, my answer to the question ”what are you studying?” is usually met with a look of confusion, followed by concern. After answering many questions about the reason behind choosing this degree, I realized the questions always revolve around three topics.
What exactly do you study?
A lot of people do not know what exactly this field of study entails. Unlike, let’s say, the health sciences where one may assume that it focuses on diseases and their cures, one would find it difficult to make assumptions about the social sciences. The main reason for this would be the lack of knowledge about its subjects.
The scope of social sciences
“Scope kya hai?” Without a doubt, this question defines the life of a student pursuing the social sciences in Pakistan. And fairly so. Employability is one of the first things that comes to mind when talking about higher education. Without knowing what exactly we study, the question of whether or not our degree will get us a job is bound to arise. And after all, we’re not the only ones concerned about our future, it’s our relatives too.
The easy way out
This one took me by surprise. It is a general belief amongst the older population, that the social sciences do not require much effort. They would justify this belief by the assumption that it requires minimal math skills. Additionally, they say it is something you can just learn about by reading books and articles, and that it does not require a classroom environment. This was the last thing I needed to hear after a day of critically analyzing readings and writing a review on them.
Conclusion
It is certainly not fun when our choices are met with disapproval. Especially when the students who chose to pursue a career in the sciences or business are looked at with admiration. While these comments do stress us out, they are most likely out of care. Moreover, an increase in awareness about the field can definitely answer a lot of people’s questions and, soften their hearts towards the social sciences and its students.

I think that people would appreciate the social sciences more if they would understand what the term itself means… even admired disciplines such as economics and law fall under the social sciences
