Starting off the Holy Month of Ramadan in 2022, after two years of a pandemic, has been tough on all of us. The heat, university schedules and sleep deprivation due to staying up till Suhur are just a few struggles. Noticing that the canteens were all shut down was the start of my day.
Despite my glee due to an avoidance of resisting the temptation of just walking up to WOKE and getting a coffee, there was a bigger social context in place. As a result, this article came into existence: Should the canteens be shut down during Ramadan? In this article, we look at the reasons as to why or why not should the latter occur.
One Side of the Story
The Holy Month of Ramadan is a respectable month for all Muslims. Living in an Islamic nation, it is often favoured to respect Muslim culture and traditions. The opening of canteens during fasting hours does not indicate sinning but may come off as disrespectful to the students fasting.
Moreover, Ehtram e Ramadan does not allow the opening up of canteens in Ramadan. This law is enforced in Punjab. As far as one is aware, not in Sindh.

To clarify, this is not to enforce Islamic values on those who cannot fast or do not conform to the same religion as Muslims. It is just to explain the symbol of showing respect to the ones around us who are fasting in the month of Ramadan.
The Other Side
On the other hand, another perspective gives rise to this question. Perhaps, one is struggling with a medical condition and has to intake nutritious substances to avoid harming oneself, should one have to wait till iftar? Additionally, if the answer is that one should bring their food, then, what if there’s an instance one is unable to do so?
Moreover, certain situations are trials for Muslims in Ramadan. If we are willingly fasting to show our devotion and piety to God, why should a person merely drinking water for their own sake distract us from that?
Culmination
Coming to an end, personally, if the notion of canteens during Ramadan is to carry on, there should at least be a place where people can receive drinks from. A secluded place should be provided to students with refreshing drinks whilst the main cafeterias are closed, similar to LUMS.
