Mrs. Robot

“My daughter-in-law does all the house chores and is also a manager at some XYZ bank”. The statement above is a perfect example of the modern-day daughter-in-law. This particular individual is the jack of all trades; she knows how to make a gol roti and submits her work reports on time. Furthermore, she is able to attend every meeting and football match and always has a smile while doing so. Moreover, she does every work with grace and perfection. People rightfully praise her and hopes that their daughters also possess the same skills. However, what people don’t see is the dark circles underneath her eyes.

The phenomena of “Mrs.Robot”

The position of women in society has been dominantly one of a homemaker. Recently, women have started to pursue further education and have entered the workforce. These actions have challenged the conventional family structure that our society is so fond of. As a way to “fit” in with the changing times, society has made it acceptable for women to have careers. However, there was one condition; women had to find a balance between housework and work life. This gave birth to the idea of “Mrs. Robot”: a woman who could manage the whole house and work responsibilities perfectly. Furthermore, this led to dehumanizing women into 24/7 working robots. Moreover, the idea was further romanticized by desi aunties and man child. Such romanization led the idea to become a norm.

The disadvantages

Dehumanizing women into a robot is damaging to their mental and physical health. Many women pay a hefty price as it’s the only way for them to pursue their dreams. Lack of rest makes these women more prone to diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Furthermore, it may trigger mental illnesses such as depression. Lack of socialization due to lack of time means that these women don’t have a support group to connect with. Meanwhile, the male counterparts are free from house chores and can rest after a hectic day of work.

The solution

The solution to this chaos is to first realize that women are human too. They can have dreams and aspirations as well. Not every woman is capable of perfectly multitasking as it’s a hard job. Men need to learn house-chores and help their wives, daughters, and mothers in running the house. The notion of women being the only homemaker should be discarded as this notion has done no good.
