The Devil came back from Hell but left the fans there
The first part of the fifth season of Netflix’s popular series Lucifer, came out last week.
Based on a character of the DC comics of the same name. Lucifer is about the Devil’s journey down on earth as a night club owner and a consultant for the LAPD. After he takes a sabbatical from his “job” as the keeper of Hell.
The Lucifer Backstory
A little background for the newcomers. Two years ago, soon after its cancellation by Fox, Lucifer was saved by Netflix. Being brought back to life for a fourth season.
You may not have heard of many instances where Netflix jumps in to save the day for a random TV show. However, after days of trending on Twitter and signing petitions. The fans of the popular TV show left Netflix with not much of a choice.
Consequently, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Lucifer’s cancellation might be the best thing that happened to the show.
Not only did the move introduce the show to a whole new array of viewers. But the media coverage of fans’ efforts to save the show led to a massive increase in popularity.
Due to this reason, when I saw the show trending in Pakistan merely two hours after its release on Friday. I wasn’t surprised.
My Response
Like many fans, I had a plan to binge-watch. All eight episodes of the new season in a day or two max! However, never did I think it would take me four days. Eventually, those eight episodes were very long and somewhat disappointing.
While the first episode served the fans with everything. Ranging from nostalgia to suspense and action. Consequently, the following episodes feel like they’ve been going on forever.
Additionally, this season, much like the previous seasons has to be applauded for showing the development and growth of each character. Not looking at you this season Linda, sorry. Rather than focusing on the two leads.
The Ups and Downs
However, with the focus on individual growth, the writers failed to build up a story that would have left its viewers on the edge of its seats. Despite being a feat the previous season accomplished with ease.
Lastly, this season felt too “safe” to be fun and it definitely could have used at least somewhat higher stakes.
Furthermore, the biggest factor that made a huge fan like me disappointed was that I waited over a year for the show to come back. Only for it to pick back the much-needed momentum and action in the very last episode.
Despite being mostly dull, the new season does, however, deserve a shout out for the amazing VFX effects in “that” epic fight in the finale. Moreover, the very creative Noir episode, that took all the fans on a very fun trip to the 1940s.
