Kindness, empathy, and altruism. These are the characteristics of the Messenger (pbuh) that Allah SWT highlights in Surah At-Tawbah verse 128;
“…Mighty (i.e. burdensome) to him is whatever distresses you. Most eager is he for your (welfare); to the believers (he is) kind, merciful”.
The Messenger’s (pbuh) empathised with his people’s hardships wholeheartedly; he chose his words carefully so as to not hurt anyone. Our beloved Messenger (pbuh) eagerly wanted others’ welfare in this life and the Hereafter, and so worked tirelessly to spread the truth. His altruism extended beyond this role as a messenger and far back in time too. He valued his loved ones and cared for the believers, exemplifying that we are to show that indeed, the believers are a single nation.
So how can we benefit from learning about the Messenger’s (pbuh) benevolent heart? By emulating his example of course!
Showing kindness on any day
Opportunities to show kindness are all around us. Greeting family and friends with a smile, being a good listener, motivating loved ones to persevere, sharing reminders from the Quran, expressing encouragement and appreciation, giving compliments and charity, helping out enthusiastically, supporting good deeds, being kind to stray animals and so much more!
“…And Allah loves the doers of good.”
Surah Ali ‘Imran verse 134
Every little deed goes such a long way. We really can’t estimate how a single smile we give can brighten someone else’s day. Imagine how happy the Messenger (pbuh) would be to see his ummat being loving and kind to each other!
Sharing reminders from the Quran
One particularly beneficial way of emulating the Messenger’s (pbuh) altruism is by sharing reminders from the Quran. Reminding each other of our purpose in this life, the power of Allah SWT, and His unmatched help and kindness, will motivate us all to persevere with positivity. If you ask me, that’s the best way to find peace!
“But Allah is your protector and He is the Best of helpers.”
Surah Ali ‘Imran verse 150
The last part of Surah At-Tawbah verse 128 reminds us of the Messenger’s (pbuh) kindness and mercy towards the believers particularly. So we must remember that the believers are a single nation; the way we behave with and help each other has to show that!
