Churails is a Pakistani web series that has blown the nation with its unique storyline and uncensored dialogue. The show’s cast include Sarwat Gilani, Mehar Bano, Nimra Bucha and Yasra Rizvi. It portrays a variety of Pakistan’s taboo topics in an unrestricted and comfortable fashion. These topics include, but are not limited to, homosexuality and a brief but powerful representation of the LGBTQ+ community.
In addition, the world-class series shows the depths of cruelty that is ingrained in Pakistani society. This includes child marriages, marital rape, and intensive child labor. It offers the best and worst of Pakistan that 4 women have to deal with. Encompassing everything from cheating husbands and married gay men to street harassment, kidnapping, and murder. Moreover, the murders are depicted in a Saadat Hassan Manto fashion that chills the audience as it explores new dimensions of insanity.
Despite the unique filmography, chilling murders and use of strong language, the most attractive aspect of Churails is women empowerment. That is to say, Churails is set in Pakistan where extreme female oppression is seen in every household, school, and workplace. This sets the show apart from other international shows with women leads. Furthermore, guest appearances by influencers such as Eman Suleman were also a pleasant surprise.
However, Churails tries to cover too many aspects of our society in 10 episode making it a confusing amalgamation. But that is an attribute of the show and we are loving it.
So what’s the catch?
Churails was released on an Indian streaming website, Zee5. As a result, Pakistani director and writer, Asim Abbasi, was able to express his creativity outside the shackles of PEMRA. (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority)
The website subscription costs Rs. 75 per week making Churails available to an international audience. However, this means limited viewership of the show within Pakistan, that protects it from widespread criticism.
But, alas, this show was a bit too real for the delusional nation. And so, in a not-so-shocking twist of events, Churails was banned for Pakistani audience on 7 October, 2020. The show had been allowed a two-month screening time before the Pakistani tradition of censorship of real, meaningful content caught up. However, censorship came late and we all got a glimpse of what our talented artists can accomplish.
Similarly, there are a multitude of western films and TV shows that have been banned or censored in Pakistan. Hence, strict surveillance has limited Pakistani media to mainstream love stories with highly problematic views streamed across the nation. To sum up, Pakistani artists do not have the platform or permission to produce a contrasting piece that stays with the audience.
