The most widely used gadgets in the world are undoubtedly cell phones. According to Statista, in 2020, the current number of mobile phone users is 4.78 billion. In other words, 61.62% of people in the world own mobile phones. We all are so dependent on cell phones that this has turned into an addiction. I feel incomplete in the absence of my cell phone. People use them widely to access different applications such as Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Facebook, and so on. Also, during lockdown, screen time has broadly risen. Though they might appear to be vital communication devices, their harmful effects cannot be ignored.
These Gadgets are a Blessing
Cell phones are a blessing for those who use them appropriately. They facilitate communication with friends, family, colleagues; indeed, most of the world’s population in an instant. You can use them for text messaging and for capturing memories in the form of photos and videos that you can share with others via WhatsApp, email, etc. The provision of a multitude of games, podcasts, music, and radio has multiplied the demand for cell phones. During the lockdown, many people use these to attend online classes as it is convenient. Finding our desired destination is no longer a difficult task as cell phones have a GPS that can guide us. This little device contains features such as notes, reminders, calendars, calculators, torch, alarm clock, and address book. These features make life so much easier than we can ever imagine!

They are a curse
Cell phones are a curse for those who misuse and overuse them. They are not only distracting but also socially disruptive as texting hinders manual communication and creates gaps in relationships. Virtual relationships take precedence over real relationships. It is hard to maintain privacy as you can be photographed or filmed anytime. Using cell phones while driving can cause deadly accidents. Their long term use can cause digital eye strain, brain cancer, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. During the lockdown, the danger of these long-term effects has increased as people are mostly using cell phones. Nomophobia (fear of being without a mobile phone) occurs due to addiction to the internet. People can misuse them for cybercrimes and this can cause damage to many lives. Also, through these devices, we are prone to watch more adult content; therefore, parents must ensure that their children use them appropriately.

Conclusion
Why are we not yet ready to give up their excessive usage despite knowing all their negative effects? The issue is that we have become addicted to our cell phones as we can access the whole world on the palms of our hands. Therefore, it is important to maintain a balance in all aspects of our lives to avoid all the negative effects. Limit checking your phone every few minutes and learn to stay in the moment. Set certain timing for using your cell phone so that you can spend the rest of your time working on having an actual life! Work on cementing your real-life relationships as in the end, only this matters.
