Each year in Pinktober, people all around try their best to raise awareness for breast cancer. Rightfully so, as is the most commonly occurring form of cancer in women and the second most commonly occurring cancer overall.

In Asia, Pakistan has the highest rate of breast cancer with almost 1 in 9 Pakistani women facing some form of this cancer at some point in their lives. Even though we have an idea of what breast cancer is, the taboo around the idea of it has led to significant misinformation. This, in turn, creates myths and theories regarding it false otherwise.

Below are 4 popular breast cancer myths, debunked:

1. Breast Cancer is Inherited ONLY

Breast cancer is often thought of as an inherited disease. Statistics, however, indicate that only around 5% to 10% of breast cancers are hereditary, proving otherwise. Therefore, any one of us may have it at some point in our lives, and the ones that do usually do not have a family history of the disease. So, in order to combat this, it is pertinent that self-examination takes place. Self-Examine yourself today!

2. Wearing a Bra leads to Breast Cancer

It was suggested that wearing a bra (especially with an underwire) compresses the lymphatic system of the breast. As a result, the toxins become trapped in the breast tissue, thus leading to cancer. However, after a study in 2014 and a consensus of doctors, it has become evident that the tightness of any kind of undergarment around the breasts has no correlation to breast cancer.

3. Only Middle-Aged Women Post Pregnancy or Older Women are Affected

Breast cancer impacts women of all ages, as well as men. Consequently, about 77% of invasive breast cancer occurs in women above 50 years. In fact, when inflicted, breast cancer sadly sees no age or boundaries.

4. Underarm Antiperspirant causes Breast Cancer

Antiperspirants containing aluminum, and other chemicals, were rumored to be absorbed into the lymph nodes make their way into the breast cells, increasing cancer risk. Moreover, a similar myth regarding shaving has existed, where shaving the underarm is thought to create tiny nicks allowing more chemicals to enter and stimulate cancer. However, no such evidence of a correlation between the two has come into play.
