But since you are now here, let me tell you a little bit about more recent examples of fake news and click-bait. The same click-bait and fake-news that you acted upon right now to get yourself here – at IBA-Today.

Not so long-ago, on April 17th, the above picture was floated around many Whatsapp groups where it was claimed that all on-campus activities were suspended due to COVID-19. This image was shared at a time when anxiety was at an all-time high and everyone was expecting IBA to be swift in its decision making. A time when you and I were vulnerable. A time jab agar appko aapka dost yeh bhi kehta na ke he is 5 minutes away from you, you would have believed him – basically TOPI.

This is not the first time a fake-news was floated around Whatsapp by, what maybe presumed as, some mischievous IBA students. There was another instance where an audio message was shared during the spring of 2020 – yes that horrible COVID-19 pass/fail semester – where a student, impersonating an IBA employee, claimed that the semester had become pass/fail.

Most of us thought that it was Obaid bhai from DPO. Ofcourse who wouldn’t be able recognize that beautiful voice; clearly no one, talk about enrollment pressure. Although this act was done with an intention to get laughs and gags, clearly the creators of the fake-news missed the mark there. Us students were left vulnerable, worried and distraught instead.

Here is how you can protect yourself from fake-news and click-bait. Its simple bro jees

Step 1

Baraye mehrbani Whatsapp family groups ki tarah aisi photos aur links par click na kiya karein. I know you want to, but Bangali Baba ki taveez sey puray semester ki parhai ek raat mein nahi hogyi.

Step 2

Be weary of Whatsapp messages that claim to be coming from institutions. Unless the institution has released a statement on their official website or email, do not believe it.

Step 3

Have patience. The official statement might be released a little later than unofficial channels. But, at least that way you can avoid any big blunders. For instance, “Semester Pass/Fail hoajye ga nahi parhtey hain!”. A word of CAUTION though. In a world as unequal as ours, that might result in you dying on the inside from anxiety.

With these 3 easy steps, schemes such as “25 din mein pasia double” can be easily avoided. Always look for official channels, email the concerned people if need be and be patient.
