We are very sad to announce an end to a generation of resilience and hard work, after the retirement of Ayaz Ahmed or as we used to call him “Ayaz Bhai”.

Career:

1982-2000

Sir Ayaz joined IBA on 29th June 1982 and the rest is history as they say. During his tenure at IBA, he worked at several departments, starting as a library assistant. He was promoted as Assistant Administrative Officer and later to an Assistant Placement officer in his first 12 years at IBA. Furthermore, in May 2000, he was appointed as the Program Manager for the Faculty of Computer Science (FCS) and spent 20 years of his career in this post. Moreover, he also got involved in activities with QEC-IBA, to help create program reviews for Ph.D. and Master’s with the HEC team, and provided documentation.

2000-2020

His last years were spent at the graduate program office. He dealt not only with graduates but also led enrollment for undergrad CS students. Well as we all know the enrollment seasons at IBA are known as the black holes. At the end of this black hole, Ayaz Ahmed used to be a guardian angel for us. He helped us in planning our courses as well as introducing new course batches.

The First Encounter

My first encounter with him was during my admission to the Institute of Business Administration Karachi. I was called in to submit all my documents. When I entered the gates of IBA, I remembered I had forgotten my acceptance letter and my paid fee challan. My brother (an IBA alumnus) had come to drop me. When I told him about the documents I had forgotten, he scolded me as he always does. Nevertheless, we still went inside hoping that they’ll only require attested result copies.

When we entered Aman CED, Sir Ayaz was collecting the documents. My brother reassured me “Ayaz bhai andar hai tension nahi lena”. So, when my turn came in to submit my documents, to put a cherry on top of all my problems, I had brought my A level Statement of Results which has no legal value. Sir Ayaz told me I had to bring General Certificate of my A levels. Well now, I really started panicking because this was the only day IBA had allocated for the submission of the documents. Ayaz bhai tranquilized me that I can print my acceptance letter and picture of paid challan from the lab. As far as result documents were concerned, I could have submitted them when the academic year began.

Mentorship

This was my first encounter with this great man. His kindness and support towards his students have always worked towards easing the lives of students and guided their career paths. Fortunately, I was privileged enough to work with him during his last year. He, along with Nazish, guided and mentored me to organize the CEO Forum (a conference based on connecting industry requirements with the current curriculum). For me, all those hours at DPO and the endless meetings seem worth an experience now.

After 38 years of service to IBA, which is currently more than my age, Sir Ayaz has finally decided to hang his coat on 3rd April 2020. In my recent conversation with him, he told me his plans to open his consumer electronics showroom. I wish him the very best for all his future endeavors and salute him for all his contributions to IBA.

  1. Ayaz- I too remember many days with you, from managing the bus to publication of the graduate directory. Your kindness and ability to help under all circumstances was exemplary. I will also recall that you called me to tell me that I had secured 3rd position in MBA and had to come to collect my certificates at the graduation ceremony. A memory of now almost 25 years.
May Allah protect you and shower health and happiness
