Nothing feels more like home than a plate of hot velvety Daal sizzling with a Tarka of garlic slices and green chilies, and served with boiled white rice. There you have it- a perfect plate of Daal Chawal.

If I think about what food brings me the most comfort, it is undoubtedly Daal Chawal. I haven’t had any other dish that is so simple yet so wholesome and satisfying at the same time while giving out such depths of bliss. It only takes one bite to get transported to a land of happiness, warmth, and love. The affection our mothers put into making a pot of daal with Tarka on it to make it taste ten times more delectable is incomparable. The entire house fills up with its comforting aroma and to me, that is the perfect definition of our home. With such a simple name, who could have imagined the myriad of flavors exploding from it reminding us that beauty lies in simplicity.

A plate of Daal Chawal is so much more than just plain food. It is a feeling, a throwback to the time our families used to sit together to eat while having a good laugh and kids screaming and running around the house. In some homes, this delicacy is a Friday ritual that brings the entire family together in laughter and joy to enjoy this delicacy while thinking of the Lord’s blessings.
