The Problem
Quintessential beauty has always been affiliated with having a light skin tone. In some Asian Pacific countries, skin bleaching and fairness treatments have become normalized. It has become a custom for brides to go for these pre-bridal packages that include skin lightening treatments. However, many around the world are reprimanding this stereotypical notion. And rightly so, because blatant colourism and racism lowers a person’s self-esteem drastically.
It is not the outer appearance of an individual that matters but his conscientiousness and kindness. Beauty lies in the sparkle of one’s eyes when they articulate about something they love. It lies in the way their lips curl when you remind them of how much you adore them. It lies in the way their face flushes when they receive a compliment. It lies in a heartfelt conversation with a friend one hadn’t met in ages. It lies in the warmth of hugging their favourite person after a tiresome day.
Be Proud of Your Skin Tone!
Many individuals have elucidated their stories of how they were discriminated on the basis of colour, how they had to deal with derogatory, condescending and racist comments about their skin tones. Dark skin is not a cumbersome badge of shame, rather a glorious masterpiece that God created. It is the mass media that portrays a colonized image of black (marginalized) people as unattractive, ugly and criminal. Black people have every right to present themselves however they feel like without sticking to the demonizing beauty standards of the West.
The beauty of these racialized people, who are also referred to as Blacks, is captivatingly exquisite. Braids and Bantu knots that mostly Black women wear are equally prepossessing as straight or wavy hair, and neon colours look alluring on black people as much as they do on white people. Rihanna is one of the many Hollywood stars who’s skin tone is dark. She is not only incredibly talented but she has also powered up millions of girls with a darker complexion by launching a make-up line that made products for all skin tones! Skin colour doesn’t manifest a person’s abilities in any way, it’s the inner beauty that makes a person beautiful.
Being beautiful doesn’t have to be standardized!
