Smoking has got serious and detrimental effects on human health. It can be traced back to being one of the leading causes of lung cancer. The use of cigarettes and vapes has risen exponentially amongst university and college students over the past few years.

Today, if you take a quick round of the campus, you would notice how freely tobacco-filled machines are being sucked down the throats by students. In this article, I will give you 5 reasons why smoking must be banned from IBA’s vicinity.

1. Not Cool Bro

Most people start smoking because apparently, it looks cool. The most popular crowd in university smoke. Apparently, it seems that just yesterday they watched Al Pacino smoking a cigar in Scarface.

Well, reality is slightly different. Coolness cannot be measured by the seconds you can keep that cigarette in your mouth. Surely there are better metrics for that.

2. The Obvious “Health Issues”

While inhaling smoke, you take in substances that can damage your lungs. Tobacco smoke consists of thousands of chemicals, including at least 70 known to cause cancer. some of these chemicals are:

  • Nicotine
  • Hydrogen
  • Cyanide
  • Formaldehyde
  • Lead
  • Ammonia

3. Burden On The Budget

Moving on, smoking is quite expensive. A cigarette costs about Rs. 10 each. The average daily male smoker smokes 8.5 cigarettes per day, which takes us to a grand total of Rs. 85! For a student on a tight budget, this is a lot of money.

4. Smoking Makes You Stink

You may not feel it, but it’s there. Your 3-minute brush plus floss regime has been nullified by your love for tobacco. Your mouth stinks, so please don’t talk to your professor. That french perfume you just put on has no purpose anymore. You are nothing but a walking ashtray.

5. Productivity Down The Drain

Cigarettes and vapes contain a little guy known as “Nicotine”, an addictive chemical. It makes you come back again and again.

Students smoke with zero control and at one point stop feeling normal without their daily dose of nicotine. They lose their will to work, study, socialize and as a result, completely drain themselves off of any productive activity.

Quitting smoking is difficult, but it is still possible. Counseling centers can be set up for students willing to give up the dirty world of tobacco. When it comes to campus, smoking should be deemed as a punishable offense. Strict measures must be taken to ensure a safe, smoke-free environment.
